Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre | Singapore Local Delights

Verdict of the Food: Delicious

A hawker centre or cooked food centre (Chinese: 小贩中心; pinyin: xiǎofàn zhōngxīn or Chinese: 熟食中心; pinyin: shúshí zhōngxīn) is an open-air complex in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the Riau Islands housing many stalls that sell a variety of inexpensive food. They are typically found in city centres, near public housing estates or transport hubs (such as bus interchanges or train stations).

Hawker centres were set up as a more sanitary option to street-side outdoor alfresco hawker dining places. Instead of mobile food hawker carts, permanent stalls in open air buildings are provided for the hawkers. Either common shared or stall dedicated tables and chairs are provided for customers. This concept has totally eliminated street hawkers in Singapore and reduced the numbers of street hawkers in major cities in South East Asia. This phenomenon is also helped by hawker licensing laws. However, it hinders new low capital hawker entrepreneurs from starting business resulting in high prices for established hawker centre stalls. Albeit, hawker centres can provide a one stop good variety of high quality and sanitary food at down to earth prices for everyone.

As a Singaporean to be honest, not all hawker centre sells quality food or even sanitized but some hawker stores in Bedok Interchange does. An alternative place to 'makan' not-so-close to Changi Airport, but better than expensive food at Changi Airport itself. Bedok is known to be the 'central' of east area, and the hawker centre is located beside Bedok Mall and close to Bedok MRT station.

There are a total of 4 dishes to introduce to you today, and the first is one of my favourite fishball, Yong Hua Handmade Fishball Meatball Noodle (永华手工鱼圆肉丸面)

(Ordered Dry Meepok Fishball & Meatball, No Chilli)
Let me repeat myself, FISHBALL. Yes, their fishball and meatball is so soft and I couldn't have enough. Their signage said it all. However, their fishcakes and noodles are relatively average. Probably below average. A bowl of noodles with fishball & meatball is priced at SGD $3 / SGD $4.

Hock Hai Curry Chicken Noodle

(Ordered Curry Chicken Mee)
I have known people who dislike yellow noodle because it gave out a smell (i couldn't describe it), it's true though, but I'm okay with it. This bowl of curry noodle comes with 'Tao Pok', chicken breast meat and potatoes, priced at SGD $4/$5/$6. Their most amazing part of the dish is their curry. My rating at 3.5.

Gim Chew Fried Hokkien Mee (锦洲炒福建面)

Prawn Noodles, one of the common dishes in most hawker centre in Singapore. We wouldn't leave the hawker centre without trying one.
You could taste the prawn stock while eating the hokkien mee which makes it sweet and savory. My fiance rate it at 4 star out of 5 overall, priced at SGD $4 onwards. We recommend anyone who are prawn noodle lovers.

Song Zhou Carrot Cake (松洲萝卜糕)

(Order Black Carrot Cake)
For those who are new to carrot cakes, simply saying, they are not carrots but chinese rice cakes. Black carrot cake has sweet sauce and white carrot cake doesn't.
Stir-fried by a talented young man who is able to deliver such an amazing dish but a little too much on their sweet sauce and not enough egg. Rated at 3.5, priced at SGD $3 onwards.

And there you are, 4 delicious dishes at Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre at Bedok Central.
