Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice | Popular Restaurant at United Square

Product verdict: Way better than Boon Tong Kee and Tian Tian Chicken.

Wee Nam Kee's Heritage (威南记鸡饭) - Founder of Wee Nam Kee, Mr. Wee Toon Oout

Established in 1989 in Singapore, Wee Nam Kee has been serving Hainanese Chicken Rice for the past 25 years. Starting out in Singapore's Upper Thomson district, the restaurant eventually found the cult status it enjoys today when it moved to the Novena area.

Multi-awarded and recognized by many food lovers as the authentic representation of Singapore's Hainanese Chicken Rice, Wee Nam Kee's flagship branch can now be found at United Square, still a stone's throw away from the original location. it continues to expand both domestically and internationally, with more location planned for Singapore, the Philippines and beyond.

I have to say he is a man of his words. Up to this point, he has 4 stores in Singapore at United Square, Marina Square, 112 Katong and Makansutra Gluttons Bay @ the Esplanade and a total of 8 stores at 4 different countries in Asia! Frankly speaking, we didn't know about their huge expansion to abroad. Well, now we know. Wee Nam Kee was popular (even now) where my parents used to bring me to Wee Nam Kee that is used to be located at Novena Ville (now at United Square) for dinner and it's constantly full house! My family and I would always be in the queue waiting outside of the store for several minutes to have our table of 4. I was not food lover back then, and never knew the purpose of queuing for same food time to time. "This chicken rice nice meh? House downstairs also got chicken rice, the food also same same one leh." I, now a glutton, used to said that to my parents and oh yeah, that was the beginning of my teenage years. We eat what our parents feed us, don't we? Those were the days.

As a glutton, fussy and spoilt human being, I have now found the answer. So, what makes them so recognized to receive such remarkable and outstanding awards? No doubt, it's their Steamed Chicken also known as White Chicken (白鸡). Those tendered juicy meat with their mouth-watering sauce just makes you drool. They offer roasted chicken and soya sauce chicken too and in fact, I have never ordered before because I was fed with steamed chicken since then, retain the same order as I aged and know it is delicious so I didn't want to waste money on other types of chicken. Sorry, sir. Aforementioned, Steamed chicken is their famous dish anyway. I have visited the store a few times and, besides steamed chicken, we have tried their Sweet & sour pork, Salad Youtiao, Hot Plate Tofu, Spicy Kang Kong Vegetables and they were all exquisite! I may sound exaggerating as everyone has different preference in food but we could guarantee the steamed chicken would not disappoint you.

It comes to no surprise that you will see a large number of families in the restaurant and a swarm of people standing outside of the store waiting during peak hours because their service are expeditious and they are family-friendly restaurant. They provide high chairs for toddlers, allow you to place your strollers aside and a basin for hand-washing. They accept reservations and take-outs too! I have a list of compliment of their restaurant, but I shall stop here. This branch is located at United Square.

Their ambiance is simple. (Wooden tables & chairs, air-conditioned and expected for family-friendly restaurants, you will encounter kids crying and loud discussions & laughter from the adults. As a chinese restaurant, we feel more welcoming.)

Receipt above is a portion for 2 and it's enough. They would serve a bowl of soup and cutlery prior arrival of the main dishes. (Hilariously, I have noticed that their size of the bowl of soup served determines the duration of the waiting time. The bigger = the longer you have to wait. Luckily for us, it's a small bowl.)

AND TA-DAH!

It didn't take too long for them to serve. We barely waited for 5 minutes and all of our dishes has arrived.

YES. Their Steamed Chicken. Looks scrumptious isn't it! It tasted as good as it looks. It's not that greasy and the tenderness just makes it appetizing.

My childhood favourite of all, Sweet & Sour Pork. Their signature is always their sauce! Sweet & Sour, of course. Meat is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside Yums. Just looking back to my photos I have taken just makes me hungry.
